The Haute Savoie in northern Italy is best known for the making of génépy. A digestif made from the masceration and distillation of rare, aromatic Alpine plants, this liqueur is not as sweet as other types.

The herbs used--atemisia mutellina, artemisia spicata, artemisia umbelliformis, and artemisia glacialis--are related to wormwood. generally, a neutral gain spirit is used as the base.

The Chartreuse monastery produced a very special recipe of génépy that is very popular in the Aosta Valley.
