In 1873, Don Cenobio Sauza bought a distillery and turned a rough local drink called "vino mezcal" into "tequila." Sauza created the first family of tequilas to be exported to the Untied States. In 1906, his son Eladio modernized the distillery and further refined production techniques. He was the first to sell tequila in bottles instead of barrels. In the 1920s, Eladio introduced the concept of making silver and golden tequilas.
