About Algeria
At the beginning of the 1960s, the country was ranked 6th in worldwide wine production. Since then, wine production has declined, but quality took a qualitative leap. Seven "appellations d'origine garantie" were differentiated.
The best wines come from the Oran region (the appellations coteaux de Mascara or Tlemcen, Dahra).
Reds are powerful and hard marked by hot climate. They are predominantly made from carignan, grenache, cinsault and morrastel. The Algiers region also produces in the coteaux de Zaccar and Médéa.
