About Catalonia
Catalonia is where the famous Spanish sparkling wine, cava, is produced in the Penedès region, west of Barcelona as well as in the Conca de Barbera.
Cava is made according to methode champenoise from local grape varieties such the xarel-lo (very sweet-scented) or parellada or macabeo or chardonnay.
The region of Alt-Penedès also produces white wines with a nice freshness.
The young appellation Montsant (powerful and concentrated reds) encircles the prestigious appellation Priorato. It is a separate land owing to a soil of llicorella (brown slate). Dense and muscular red wines inherit from this key mineral.
Other appellations include: Pla de Bages, Costers del Segre.
