It is here that Port is produced, the most prestigious fortified wine in the world, which can be red or white.
Before fermentation of the wine is complete, a certain amount of brandy is added so that wine does not transform all of its sugars into alcohol. Result: a strong yet also sweet wine.
There are several classifications of Port: simple Ruby; Vintage character; Tawny; Colheitas (these are Vintage Tawnys); and Late Bottled Vintage (L.B.V), made from Port of a single vintage but is lower in grade than the best possible Port: Vintage Port, which is made exclusively from the best vintages.
Note that Crusted Port is a long-lived blend but are high out of the barrels just like Vintage Ports.
